Sterile saline solutions are vital to nearly most farm operations because the solution is isotonic with body fluids meaning it produces an equal distribution of fluid inside/outside of cells and structures.

This is important because it may be used as a solvent or diluent for antibiotics and possibly other pharmaceuticals and biologicals where compatible to maximize treatment effectiveness. Lastly, isotonic saline solutions are essential for washing mucous membranes and other tissue surfaces.

It’s important to warm the sterile saline solution to body temperature before use and to administer slowly by intravenous or subcutaneous injection.

The amount and rate of administration must be judged by a veterinarian in relation to the condition being treated and the clinical response of the animal, being careful to avoid over-hydration.

When used as a solvent or diluent for pharmaceuticals and biologicals, follow manufacturer’s directions provided in included pamphlet.

Each 100 mL contains 0.9 gram of sodium chloride.
