Material and Construction
Swab head: usually made of polyurethane foam, this material has the characteristics of softness, good elasticity, strong water absorption, etc. It can gently contact the nasal mucosa, reduce discomfort during sampling, and effectively absorb secretions and cell samples in the nasal cavity.
Handle: Generally made of medical grade plastics such as polypropylene (PP) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer (ABS), it is hard and lightweight, making it easy for sampling personnel to grip and operate. Some handles are also designed with break points, making it convenient to place the swab head into the sampling tube after sampling.

Scope of application

Preparation before sampling: Check if the swab packaging is intact and mark relevant information on the label of the sampling tube, such as the patient’s name, sampling time, sample type, etc. At the same time, ask the patient to clean nasal secretions such as mucus.
Insertion of swab: The sampler holds the swab handle and gently inserts the swab head into the patient’s nasal cavity, slowly advancing along the nasal passage, usually reaching the position of the nasopharynx or middle turbinate. The specific depth depends on the patient’s age and nasal structure.
Rotating collection: Stay in the nasal cavity for 15-30 seconds to allow the swab to fully contact the nasal mucosa, absorb secretions and cells, and then gently rotate the swab 3-5 times to ensure sufficient sample collection.
Extraction and storage: Slowly remove the swab, taking care to avoid contact between the swab head and other parts outside the nasal cavity to avoid contaminating the sample. Place the swab into the sampling tube, break the handle at the break point, discard the tail, tighten the tube cover, and send the sample for testing in a timely manner.
