Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is not a human coronavirus (NCP).
Cat coronavirus (FCoV) is a large family, of which enteric coronavirus (FECV) is prevalent in many cats and is extremely contagious. Generally, if one cat in a colony is diagnosed with feline coronavirus, 90% of the colony is probably already infected. However, there is no effective vaccine to prevent feline coronavirus.
Current research indicates that there are more than 50 species of coronavirus in four genera, which can infect many animals.
Feline coronavirus is transmitted via the gastrointestinal tract. Usually, it causes illness in kittens, causing increased intestinal motility, increased body temperature, decreased appetite, vomiting, increased intestinal motility, diarrhea, and anal swelling.
Signs of dehydration are seen in more severe cases, while mortality from FCoV infection is low. Feline intestinal coronavirus will only show symptoms when first infected, but after a single infection, it will carry feline coronavirus for life and show no obvious clinical signs after that.
It is worth noting that feline coronavirus is very common in some households with many cats.
You can test your cat for feline coronavirus using the FCoV test kits.
The immune system of kittens is very weak and needs to be replenished by breast milk’s immune function and nutrition. Therefore, if a kitten infected with feline coronavirus stops breastfeeding, it will continue to have diarrhea, vomiting, severe dehydration and even death until its immune system is established.
Coronavirus kitten vomiting and diarrhea is a serious matter, so the first time to go to the hospital and treatment is also very important!
